Shrine of our Lady of Light and the Archdiocesan youth commission jointly presented the “Mega Job Mela” which was held on 11-06-2016 at Luz Church Community Hall, Mylapore. The event started with the inauguration ceremony by Honorable Chief Guests, Most Rev.Dr. George Antonysamy (Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore), Msgr.Fr.M.Arulraj VG, Msgr.Fr.S.J.Anthonisamy VG, Rev.Fr.Patrick, Rev.Fr.Bernanrd Lawrence, Rev.Fr.Peter Thumma and Rev.Fr.Varghese Rozario (Director of Paadhi and Co-ordinator of youth commission). Nearly 850 to 900 candidates registered for this and 25 to 30 companies attended the Job Mela. Nearly 150 candidates were placed on the very same day. This event was a successful one due to the effort and support of everybody. Finally there was a small evaluation for the HR’s and the youth commission about the job fair where all shared their experience. And with God’s presence it was a very successful event.
Special thanks to all our sponsors and youth of our parish.
As a first time initiative the Parish Priest, Rev Fr Peter Thumma, and the parishioners of the Shrine of Our Lady of Light have endeavored to start “Spoken English” classes within the parish. This is to address a very real need of the underprivileged parishioners and also the people living in the neighborhood. The classes are free of charge.
The classes commenced on 2nd May 2016 and ended on 12th May 2016. The day starts at 9am with a prayer and action song and finishes at 1pm. Post graduate students from the English department of Stella Maris College are the teachers who are helping us teach the students. Around 50 students have registered. They have been put into batches of Stds 5, 6 & 7, Stds 8 & 9, Stds 10, 11 & 12 and a group of adults.
The long term goal is to make this an ongoing programme within the parish and without, so that children or adults, as the case may, be would not be found lacking eligibility, just because they do not have the English language speaking skills.
